The Daily Record – Rep. Harris’ big government idea

Like it or not, Maryland is a blue state that overwhelmingly sends Democratic lawmakers to Washington and Annapolis. One exception is the Eastern Shore, where voters consistently send Rep. Andy Harris – a self-proclaimed conservative – to Congress. As Maryland’s lone Republican voice in our nation’s capital, Rep. Harris’ presence is an important one, especially to rebuff President Biden’s progressive policies that are increasingly impinging upon our individual freedoms.
We’re fortunate to have a voice that stands against big government regulations, tax increases, and mammoth spending bills that harm working families today and future generations. He’s also fighting to reduce red tape that is strangling the expedient rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge – which is a top priority for the City of Baltimore and our entire state.
Given Harris’ strong record of support for limited government, it’s surprising then that he is championing an effort to limit consumer choice and increase the influence of the federal government at the grocery store.
Allowing government to restrict choices at the grocery store would violate not only the right of people on SNAP to choose what to serve their families. It would also give lawmakers the encouragement to try restricting choices for all in the name of healthy eating. Instead of treating only SNAP recipients like second-class citizens because they needed government assistance, bureaucrats could propose applying their anti-choice diets on all Americans.
